Common questions, clearly answered

At what age should my child start orthodontic treatment?

Most kids benefit from an orthodontic evaluation around age 7 because it helps us spot developing bite or jaw concerns early. That doesn’t mean your child will automatically start treatment right away. Many kids simply need monitoring until the timing is ideal. If early treatment is recommended, it’s usually to guide growth, create space, or prevent bigger issues later.

During your free consultation, we’ll use digital scans and records to explain what we’re seeing and what timing makes the most sense.

Do I need braces, or are aligners an option?

The right option depends on your bite, the type of tooth movement needed, and your preferences for appearance and routine. Clear aligners can be a great fit for many teens and adults because they’re removable and discreet, but some cases benefit from the control of braces.

At Lovell Orthodontics, we’ll walk you through metal braces, clear braces, and clear aligners and explain why one option may be more efficient for your goals. You’ll also get a clear timeline and what-to-expect plan before you commit.

Will orthodontic treatment hurt?

Most patients feel pressure or soreness for a few days after starting treatment or after adjustments, especially during the first week. It’s typically more “tight and tender” than sharp pain, and it improves as your mouth adjusts.

We’ll share comfort tips — like what to eat, how to manage irritation, and how to relieve soreness — so you know exactly what to do. If something feels off (like a pokey wire), we can usually help quickly and keep you comfortable.

How do I care for braces day to day?

Brushing and flossing are extra important with braces because food can collect around brackets and wires. We’ll show you the best technique and recommend tools that make cleaning easier, especially around the gumline. You’ll also learn how to protect your cheeks and lips if anything rubs, and what to do if a bracket feels loose. With good daily care and regular check-ins, you can keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout treatment.

What foods should I avoid with braces?

Hard, sticky, or crunchy foods can break brackets, bend wires, or slow down progress. Common troublemakers include chewing ice, hard candies, popcorn kernels, sticky candy, and very crunchy chips. We’ll give you a simple list of foods to skip and easy alternatives so meals don’t feel restrictive. If something does break, call us — we’ll guide you on what to do and schedule a quick repair if needed

How do financing, insurance, and payments work?

Lovell Orthodontics is out-of-network with dental insurance, but we file claims on your behalf to help you maximize your benefits. We’ll review your orthodontic coverage, explain what your plan may contribute, and outline expected costs before treatment starts. Payment is straightforward — we accept cash, checks, and credit cards. If you have questions at any point, our team will walk you through the process so nothing feels confusing or stressful.

What is a Schwarz appliance, and when is it used?

A Schwarz appliance is a removable orthodontic expander often used during growth to create space and guide development. It’s typically recommended when the arch needs widening, or crowding is developing early, and it can support a healthier path for permanent teeth. Because it’s removable, success depends on consistent wear, and we’ll show you exactly how to use and care for it. During evaluation, we’ll explain whether a Schwarz appliance or a different expander is best for your child’s needs.

Will I need a retainer after treatment?

Yes — retainers help keep your teeth in their new positions after braces or aligners are finished. Teeth can shift naturally over time, so retainers are a key part of protecting your investment and results. We’ll fit you with a custom retainer and give clear instructions on when to wear it and how to keep it clean. If you ever lose or damage your retainer, contact us. Replacing it quickly helps prevent unwanted shifting.
